Choosing and hanging a mirror in the bathroom isn’t something most people think much about. They may simply grab the first one they see that they like the looks of and hang it over the sink at any height. However, there are some tips that can help make bathroom mirrors more useful and attractive in the room.
Homeowners should take into consideration the heights of everyone in the household and make sure the average height is somewhere in the middle of the upper and lower edges of the mirror. These mirrors typically look good if the centerline of the mirror is between the counter and the ceiling. Although it’s most common for the mirror to be placed above the top of the faucet, in some cases with tall faucets, it is actually perfectly pleasing to have the bottom of the mirror be a bit below the top of the faucet. The mirror should be tall enough so that it’s a few inches taller than eye level for even the tallest person in the family. Some people recommend a gap of about six inches between the top of the sink and the bottom of the mirror.
When choosing a mirror, keep in mind that not just any width will do. The mirror shouldn’t be wider than the sink or vanity it is going to hang above. If there’s a double sink or a wider vanity, then the mirror can be wider, but those with just a small sink will want to opt for a narrower mirror or the proportions of the bathroom will look odd. Unless you’re designing a bathroom from scratch and find a mirror you love, you’ll want to double check the proportions of the sink before making the purchase, as it’s easier and less expensive to replace a mirror than a vanity or sink. There should be between two and four inches between the edges of the vanity and the sides of the mirror.
To get a better idea of how any mirror would look, consider cutting sample sizes of mirrors out of paper and hanging them up over the vanity to see which ones you like the best. It will help make the bathroom brighter if the mirror can be made large enough to reflect the light from a nearby window.
